Shelter dogs need to socialize, too!

Shelter dogs love to get outside, stretch their legs, and socialize! Our decision to include dog playgroups as an enrichment exercise has been a huge success thanks to our trained staff and volunteers who are dedicated to keeping the groups safe.  Being able to positively interact with other dogs is essential for canine mental well-being, and a healthy mind means a happier dog!

We base our playgroups around the “Success through Socialization” program created by Aimee Sadler, the behavior and training program director at the Longmont Humane Society in Colorado.  Aimee visited the Pennsylvania SPCA this summer so that everyone at the shelter could learn the correct way to hold a playgroup.
